Linux for Palm Handhelds
A first review of the trial version
The US based company Empower Technologies Inc. presents with the Linux DA O/S DB Version 1.0 the first Palm OS compatible other operating system. The Linux version which is modified for running with the Motorola Dragonball processors operates on Palm IIIx, IIIxe and Vx and replaces the existing PalmOS.
The new systems provides a graphical user interface, energy managment, a virtual keyboard and offers a multilingual structure. Additional it provides a handwriting recognition system as well. Togehter with a Software Development Kit (SDK) and a tool to synchronize the informations its possible to licence it.
Empower announced a trial version of the Linux operating system for Wednesday and published there the file with the operating system at 12:00 PST for downloading. A few seconds later the whole server was almost down. However, in the meantime the conditions are pretty good again.
The trial version includes a ROM file and a manual. Its not possbile to use or try the Linux operating system with POSE, the PalmOS emulator.
The Palm Upgrade Package for Palm OS 3.5 is necessary for installing the Linux ROM. It includes the Flash ROM Tool which can transfer the new operating system to the Palm handheld. Its recommend to backup the original ROMs before installing the new one.
The installation of the 983 kB sized Linux ROM comes without any problems. Afterwards the start screen is coming up and reminds every two minutes that the installed ROM is only a demo version.
From the start screen the standard applications like adressbook, calculatur, clock, datebook and the game "Hardball" are accessible.
After the first impressions, the systems seems to be running fast and offers a good stability.
Its not possible to send information via the IR port of the device. Also a recognition system of handwriting is not included in the trial version. The only way to enter text is the build in virtual keyboard which can be switched between the QWERTY mode (key positions like on a common PC keyboard) or a special natural mode (keys in alphabetical order).
